History
La primera cita que se encuentra de este lugar es en el año 1125, según la obra de José María Lacarra Documentos para el estudio de la reconquista y la repoblación del valle del Ebro (Estudios de Edad Media de la Corona de Aragón, Zaragoza 1946), y documenta la variantes Placencia, Placença, Placencia de Rivo Xalonis y Plazencia de Rivo Xalonis.
Desde el siglo XIV fue señorío de los Condes de Luna hasta que en el año 1429 pasó a los Lanuza. En el año 1611, Felipe II le concedió a Pedro de Lanuza el título de conde de Plasencia. También otorgó carta de población (Carta Puebla) a la localidad.
A mediados del siglo XIX la villa tenía contabilizada una población de 517 habitantes. Aparece descrita en el decimotercer volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
Monuments
Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista, siglo XVII, con planta de cruz latina, capillas laterales y crucero con cúpula octogonal, posee interesantes retablos barrocos.
Muchas de las calles del pueblo están cubiertas por antiguos pasadizos.
