Belmonte de Gracián (Aragonese: Belmón de Grazián) is a village near Calatayud in the province of Zaragoza in Aragon, Spain. It is a fortified village which sits at the foot of a 15th-century castle. It is the birthplace of Baltasar Gracián y Morales, and in 1985 was renamed to Belmonte de Gracián in his honour. Previously the town was known as Belmonte de Calatayud and Belmonte del Río Perejiles. The archaeological remains of the Celtiberian and Romano-Celtiberian town of Segeda-Sekeiza are located between Belmonte de Gracián and the nearby town of Mara.

Origins

Hasta 1910 se llamó Belmonte del río Perejiles.[cita requerida] Antes de la reforma de la nomenclatura municipal de 1916 el municipio se llamaba simplemente Belmonte. En dicha fecha su nombre fue modificado por el de Belmonte de Peregil, topónimo que fue rectificado de nuevo a finales del mismo año por el de Belmonte de Calatayud. En 1985, y en homenaje a su ilustre hijo, Baltasar Gracián, que nació en esta localidad en 1601, pasó a denominarse Belmonte de Gracián.

History

A mediados del siglo XIX el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 825 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el cuarto volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:

El monumento más notable de su casco antiguo es la torre mudéjar de la iglesia de San Miguel, que podría ser, en su parte inferior, de construcción islámica.

Otros lugares de interés son el yacimiento celtibérico de Segeda, situado en sus cercanías y la Fuente del Despeño, que en el pasado tuvo un uso abundante.
