Fayón (Spanish: [faˈʝon]) or Faió (Catalan: [faˈjo]) is a municipality located in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. According to the 2004 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 395 inhabitants. Fayón is located between the Ebro and the Matarranya rivers in La Franja area; the local dialect is a variant of Catalan.

Origins
El término «Fayón» aparece por primera vez en 1219; proviene del árabe حيون, Ḥayyūn, Fayún, nombre de persona. Para algunos estudiosos pudiera ser que procediera del bereber egipcio.
History
Historically Fayón and its municipal term were considered part of the Matarraña; presently it is included in the Bajo Aragón-Caspe comarca.
During the Battle of the Ebro some of the most bloody battles in the Spanish Civil War were fought in the Auts area, about 8 km north of Fayón. On 25 July 1938 the 42 division of the Spanish Republican Army successfully crossed the river in this area but was surrounded and massacred in the Auts hills by the rebels.
Traditionally Fayón was part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lerida. In 1955 the Cesaraugustanae et aliarum decree of the Consistorial Congregation was published; on the 2 September of the same year, Fayón, along with Mequinenza, was segregated from Lleida and merged with the Archdiocese of Zaragoza.
The ancestral village was submerged by the waters of the Ribarroja Reservoir in 1967 and the present-day village was built by ENHER, the state-owned company that built the dam. After the closure of the nearby coal mines, Fayón has lost about 50% of its population.
Monuments
El pueblo posee un importante patrimonio natural en sus bosques y campos, además de su parte del embalse. Entre su patrimonio arquitectónico y cultural se encuentran:
Restos del Castillo de Badón, antigua fortaleza del siglo XIV.
La ermita de San Jorge (siglo XVIII), situada a unos 5 km en la carretera dirección Mequinenza, y el espacio natural que la circunda.
La ermita del Pilar: construida en un alto muy próximo al antiguo pueblo. Según proyecto de José Rodríguez Mijares, fue una iniciativa del párroco D. Jerónimo Ortiz Sistach, quien consideró que el pueblo debería contar con un templo dedicado a la Virgen que pudiera aprovecharse para obtener la indulgencia plenaria del Año Santo Mariano de 1954, declarado por el papa Pio XII. El interior está decorado con frescos de temática mariana realizados por los artistas María Pilar Burges Aznar, José Gumí Cardona y Juan Baldellou Celma.
La iglesia parroquial de San Juan Evangelista, que sigue un diseño semejante al dado a los templos de los pueblos de colonización de los años 60-70 en la España del régimen de Franco (1939-1978).
El museo de la Batalla del Ebro: Tras la batalla del Ebro, en el entorno del pueblo, los campos y montes del municipio, quedaron muchos restos del armamento usado en la contienda. Durante mucho tiempo los vecinos recogieron y almacenaron todo el material que pudieron. En 2012 se inauguró el Museo donde ha quedado expuesto ordenadamente todo lo encontrado en el campo de batalla próximo. En el museo se hace un detallado recorrido por, tal vez, la batalla que decidió el final de la guerra civil española (1936-1939).
