History
A mediados del siglo XIX la villa tenía contabilizada una población de 597 habitantes. Aparece descrita en el quinto volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
Hasta la reforma de la nomenclatura municipal de 1916 el municipio se llamaba simplemente Cañizar. En dicha fecha su nombre fue modificado por el de Cañizar del Olivar.
