Vélez de Benaudalla is a municipality in the province of Granada, Spain. According to the 2008 census (INE), the city has a population of 2,980 inhabitants. The municipality includes the hamlet of La Gorgoracha, about 5 km (3.1 mi) south of the municipal center, towards the town of Motril. The Spanish national highway Autovía A-44, a.k.a. European route E 902, has its southern terminus here. Originally a farming area during the 16th century, it is now populated with scattered structures that are used for sporadic stays on weekends or holidays.

Origins

El topónimo Vélez, según el padre Tapia, tiene un origen íbero, apoyándose en hallazgos arqueológicos pero sin una justificación lingüística, y conectándolo con el antroponímico beles y este con el protovascuence beltz, con significado de negro. De todas formas, Ferrán Torra defiende una raíz latina relacionada con el término vallis, traducción de valle.

En las elecciones municipales de 2023, el Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) fue la fuerza más votada con 1059 sufragios (57,77 %), lo que le permitió obtener 7 concejales, seguido del Partido Popular (PP), que alcanzó 610 votos (33,27 %) y 4 ediles. Izquierda Unida (IU) logró 149 votos (8,12 %) sin conseguir representación.
