Fue ciudad celtíbera de los lusones conocida con el nombre de Tertakom que emitió su propia moneda.
A mediados del siglo XIX la villa tenía contabilizada una población de 274 habitantes. Aparece descrita en el decimocuarto volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
