Perteneció a la antigua Hermandad de Valdoncina.
Hasta la reforma de la nomenclatura municipal de 1916 el municipio se llamaba simplemente Santovenia. En dicha fecha su nombre fue modificado por el de Santovenia de Valdoncina.
