Montesquiu (Catalan pronunciation: [muntəsˈkiw]) is a municipality in the comarca (county) of Osona[1] in Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the banks of the Ter river in the north of the comarca. It is on the main communication route between Barcelona and Puigcerdà, served by the N-152 road and a station on the Renfe railway line. The thirteenth-century castle is used for cultural events during the summer. Montesquiu became part of Osona in the comarcal revision of 1990. Previously, it formed part of Ripollès.

History

El castillo de Montesquiu está documentado desde 1258. A finales del siglo XIX fue adquirido por la familia Juncadella y el último propietario de la familia lo cedió a la Diputación de Barcelona. El núcleo de población surgió a mediados del siglo XVII junto al camino real de Barcelona a Puigcerdà. A finales del siglo XIX se instalaron algunas industrias. En 1934 Montesquiu se segregó del municipio de San Quirico de Besora al que hasta entonces pertenecía.
