Mascaraque

Mascaraque is a municipality located in the province of Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. According to the 2006 census (INE), the municipality had a population of 550 inhabitants.

Origins
El término "Mascaraque" podría proceder de la raíz celta Mascaracu (m), con el sufijo -acus, junto a una base maska (r)- también de origen celta. Su significado no es fácil de precisar, pero podría ser el de 'negro, oscuro' referido al color de la piedra o el terreno.
Relacionando Mascaraque con los numerosos topónimos que presentan un tema similar como Mascarat, Mascarell o Mascaró estaríamos según Corominas ante un origen prerromano con influencia árabe.
History
The origin of the town goes back to the times of Arab domination. Its castle was built in the 14th century, and renovated in 1518 when it was turned into the fortress-palace of Juan de Padilla. At that time locality acquired the category of villa that differentiated it from the nearby villages.
Today Mascaraque can testify to the urban aspirations characteristic of a villa, with its castle-fortress and several small palaces with distinctive shields.
During the War of Independence, the municipal archives were burned, so that little information is known about the past of the municipality. During the 19th century, it resisted the occupation of the Carlistas, and the population was defended with a militia of its own. During the invasion by the forces of Basilio (1837–1838), Mascaraque was the only population in the area which refused to give supplies requested by the Carlist generals, reason why the later government authorized them to include the phrase "They did not fear" in their coat of arms.

Castillo de Mascaraque: construido en el siglo el XIV y considerado Casa Fuerte-Palacio de la familia Padilla.
Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena: edificación barroca del siglo XVIII.
Ermita de Los Cristos: actualmente restaurada y sede del museo del pintor local Juan Correa de Vivar. Su nombre se debe a que antiguamente se guardaban en ella los pasos de Semana Santa.

Buses
El término está atravesado por la línea de ferrocarril Madrid-Sevilla (AVE), por la Autovía de los Viñedos CM-42 (salida-19) que a su vez es la continuación de la A-42 que parte de Madrid y está circunvalado por la Carretera Comarcal CM-400 de Toledo a Mora de cuya población, el núcleo urbano dista tan solo unos 3 km. La CM-4022 lo une con Villaminaya y Sonseca.
