Malgrat de Mar

En los censos de población entre 1842 y 1960 recibía el nombre de Malgrat.​

Malgrat de Mar was originally part of the barony of Palafolls and the first fishermen's houses were built around the chapel of Sant Antoni Abat, on the left bank of a stream called Malgrat de Mar. During the 16th century, it was attacked by the Ottomans in 1543, 1545 and 1550. In 1373, a charter of the founding population called Vilanova de Palafolls was granted and in 1559, it achieved the parish independence from Sant Genís de Palafolls (now a neighbourhood of Palafolls).

Since the 14th century, Malgrat de Mar has been recognized as a prominent cultural, artistic and social center. Modernism in Malgrat de Mar also left its mark.

The name Malgrat appears in the 19th century, although the place name is already documented in the 13th century. The etymology is discussed as either pre-Roman or it could be related to bad degree in the sense of disembarkation (mal grau). Some speculate that the name originates from French soldiers taken prisoner in Hostalric during the Crusade against the Crown of Aragon, who were taken to work "reluctantly" (mal great, in Catalan) According to Bernat Boades, in the Libre dels Feyts d'armes de Catalunya, "He made them go to work in a big tower near the sea. As they went there reluctantly, they went from Palafolls to work in that land they called Malgrat (reluctantly)"

On May 30, 1937, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, the transport ship Ciudad de Barcelona, carrying volunteer brigadiers, was torpedoed by Italian-flagged submarines and sank in front of Malgrat de Mar about 2 miles from the beach. The fishermen who witnessed the action then went out to sea to rescue the survivors and every year the descendants of the fishermen who made the rescue commemorate it.

During the Storm Gloria, Malgrat was significantly affected and was categorized as one of the worst locations that the storm had hit. This is partly due to the fact that Malgrat is bordering the Tordera river, with the main source of water to the town being temporarily stopped due to such high levels of water.

Patrimonio:

Iglesia de San Nicolás: Tal como la conocemos hoy es del siglo XVIII, aunque se conservan restos de épocas anteriores. Fachada de estilo neoclásico dedicada a San Nicolás de Bari.

Antiguas Pescaderías: En la parte sur estaban las carnicerías y en el lado norte las pescaderías. Actualmente aún se conserva la piedra donde se ponía el pescado.

El Ayuntamiento: De estilo modernista, fue inaugurado el 15 de agosto de 1913. Su interior se ha remodelado completamente.

Edificio de la Cooperativa: Antigua casa señorial fortificada, hoy biblioteca municipal.

Torre de l'Esquena: Torre de estilo modernista que actualmente tiene una función residencial por la misma familia de la que coge nombre la torre.

La Pilona: isla artificial situada a unos 300 m de la costa, lugar de descanso de numerosos cormoranes.

Deporte:

Malgrat de Mar dispone de varias asociaciones dedicadas al deporte y otras actividades afines, como de fútbol y fútbol sala(Inter Esportiu Malgrat CFS y CE Malgrat), baloncesto (AECAM, Club Bàsquet Malgrat), y otras dedicadas al tenis, hockey, patinaje, judo, ajedrez, caza y petanca. Hay jugadores de baloncesto que han salido a la luz internacionalmente, como por ejemplos los hermanos Margall.

La villa cuenta con una numerosa actividad cultural. Tiene grupos de diablos, gigantes, agrupación sardanista, corales y grupos de habaneras, entre otros. Además de clubes deportivos de fútbol, baloncesto, balonmano, natación y tenis. El municipio cuenta con una frecuencia de radio propia, Ona Malgrat 107.4 FM. Sus principales fiestas son:

Rúa de Carnaval: viernes anterior al domingo de carnaval.

Sant Jordi: Paradas con venta de libros y rosas en la calle.

Festa de Sant Joan i Sant Pau: Celebración del antiguo baile de Sant Joan i Sant Pau, variante malgratense del Ball de les Morratxes.

Fiesta mayor de "Sant Roc": próxima al 16 de agosto, con numerosos conciertos al aire libre, fuegos artificiales, cine y representaciones teatrales.

Tardor de música (otoño de música): En octubre, con concursos internacionales de bandas de música y corales.

Jornadas gastronómicas del Fesol del Ganxet: Dedicadas al legumbre típico de Malgrat, el fesol (judía) del Ganxet.

Fiesta mayor de "Sant Nicolau": La fiesta mayor pequeña, de invierno.
