Hernani

During the Middle Ages, the territory that would form the province of Gipuzkoa was divided in valleys and Hernani was one of them. The valley of Hernani formerly extended through all the space surrounding the lower courses of the rivers Urumea and Oria.

The valley of Hernani is first attested in a document whereby the Castilian count Fernán González of Castile grants vows in favour of the Monasteries of San Millan de la Cogolla, dating from the year 938 but believed to be a fake document from the thirteenth century. Dated from the late twelfth century, the donation document of the Monastery of San Sebastián to the Monastery of Leyre in Navarre by the king Sancho VI of Navarre states that the monastery of San Sebastián was in the borders of Hernani.

When this Navarrese king founded the town of San Sebastián around 1180, the territory of the valley of Hernani was included within the jurisdiction of the new coastal town. It is not known when Hernani turned into a town, with its charter being lost in a fire along with other files. Some assume that the foundation of the town occurred during the reign of the king Alfonso X of Castile in the second half of the 13th century, when this king established a network of strategic towns dotting the route reaching the coast of Gipuzkoa, with Hernani as one of its strategic localities. Others delay the foundation of the town until the late 14th century in 1379, as a document of the 15th century cites an agreement between the councils of Hernani and San Sebastián for the use of the mountains of the valley of Urumea that took place in 1379, which attests to the existence by that time of the town Hernani.

The town of Hernani extended its jurisdiction only to part of the old valley. It lost all the coastal and lower valley of Urumea now included in the San Sebastián strip, and the western area in the valley of the Oria, which became the town of Usurbil in 1371. Its western limit continued to be the Oria river, while on the east the mountains separated it from Oiartzun. The old town of Hernani sits on a 42 metres high rise towering over the left bank of the river Urumea and in turn located at the foot of Mount Santa Barbara. The old town was oval in shape, surrounded by walls with several entrances, of which only one (in Felipe Sagarna "Zapa" street) is surviving to date. It was originally made up of two streets, the High Street, Kale Nagusia, and Kardaberaz Street, intersected at the same time by a perpendicular lane (streets Nafarroa and its extension Felipe Sagarna "Zapa").

The first municipal ordinances go back to 1542, since copies of the 1512 ordinances disappeared during an invasion of the French army. The town has been subject to invasions and destruction numerous times throughout its history: the medieval factional wars, French invasions in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; as well as the hard sieges during the Carlist Wars and finally the 1936 Spanish Civil War. In October 1936, Hernani was the site of a massacre of 200 civilians perpetrated by the nationalist forces.

In 1986, Lasarte, a historical district of Hernani located in the valley of Oria, detached from the town following its rapid urban and demographic development.

El Casco Urbano de Hernani, antiguamente amurallado, está catalogado como Conjunto Monumental. En su interior se conserva el trazado medieval de las calles y algunos edificios de interés.

En el término municipal de Hernani se encuentra el Museo Chillida-Leku consagrado a la obra del escultor donostiarra Eduardo Chillida.

Por otro lado, en relación con las fiestas patronales de San Juan, que se celebran entre el 23 y 27 de junio, una semana antes del comienzo de esta se realiza un concierto que preludia las mencionadas fiestas. En ella participan diversos grupos musicales del municipio, tales como la Banda de txistularis de Hernani y alrededores, la orquesta de acordeón y el coro pertenecientes a la Hernaniko Musika Eskola Publikoa, los coros Ozenki, Kantuz y el coro parroquial y la Banda de música de Hernani. Además de diversos grupos de baile tradicional como Ttarla Dantza taldea.

Este concierto es conocido como San Juan Iragarpen Kontzertu, concierto preludio de las fiestas de San Juan.

En el parque Goiz-Eguzki, en los jardines del centro social Hogar del Jubilado de Hernani, se encuentra un Ginkgo biloba de 21 m de altura considerado uno de los árboles singulares del País Vasco.

Gastronomía:

La especialidad de la comarca es el jabalí a la sidra.

Fiestas:

Las fiestas patronales se celebran a finales del mes de junio, coincidiendo con la festividad de San Juan Bautista (24 de junio). Es tradicional que los días 24, 25 y 26 de junio, coincidiendo con las fiestas, se baile la antes llamada de forma indiferente maskuri-dantza (danza de la vejiga) o Azeri-dantza (danza del zorro), un baile tradicional, y que ahora se conoce mayoritariamente por este último nombre ya que, en la década de los 80 del siglo XX, se añadió un personaje con una careta hecha con un zorro que lo acompañaba.

Ocio:

Hernani es una de las localidades con más tradición en la elaboración artesanal de sidra. Junto con Astigarraga y Usúrbil forma el triángulo de las sidrerías donde se concentran la mayor parte de las sidrerías guipuzcoanas. Hay en torno a una decena de estos establecimientos en el municipio. Durante la temporada de sidrerías (de febrero hasta mayo) la localidad acoge numerosos visitantes que acuden de Guipúzcoa y de las provincias limítrofes a las sidrerías. Los bares del casco viejo de Hernani suelen tener una especial animación durante los fines de semana de esta época gracias a estos visitantes.

Deporte:

El Club Deportivo Hernani es el club de fútbol de la ciudad de Hernani, en Guipúzcoa.

El club fue fundado en 1940. En 1955 logró ascender por primera vez en su historia a la Tercera división española. Su techo histórico lo alcanzó en 1991 cuando logró ascender hasta la segunda división B. El Hernani logró permanecer dos temporadas en esta categoría, cayendo en 1993 de nuevo a la Tercera división española. En la temporada 1994-95 llegó a promocionar de nuevo para el ascenso a segunda división B, pero sin éxito.

Al finalizar la temporada regular 2008-09 se clasificó para los play-offs de ascenso a la Tercera división española aunque finalmente no pudo ascender.

En la temporada 2010-11, el Hernani consigue el ascenso a tercera división tras ganar el campeonato de División de Honor Regional, lo que da el ascenso directo.

El club cuenta además con secciones de atletismo, bolos y pelota vasca.

La sección de pelota también de larga tradición cuenta con innumerables campeonatos en diferentes campeonatos y categorías.

Entre los diferentes clubes deportivos de Hernani, se puede destacar el club de rugby: Hernani Club de Rugby Elkartea (HCRE) que, actualmente, milita en división de honor del rugby estatal pero que, en su día, logró ser subcampeón de España (1983/84). Además, este club, posee una gran cantera que ha cosechado grandes éxitos a lo largo de los años.
