Herguijuela de la Sierra

Herguijuela de la Sierra is a village and municipality in the province of Salamanca, western Spain, part of the autonomous community of Castilla y León. It is located 86 kilometres (53 mi) from the provincial capital city of Salamanca and has a population of 300 people. It is known, besides for its and other towns in the area's quaint old village air, for having a several-hundred-year-old beech tree nearby, one of two in all of western-central Spain.

Origins
Se registra en 1188 como Ecclesiola; en 1215, Ecclesia; en 1629, Erguijuela. No tiene relación con el topónimo Guijuelo, a pesar de lo sostenido en un documento anterior por el propio Llorente (ibid., p. 106, 247). Su origen está en el latín "ecclēsĭŏla, diminutivo de "ecclēsĭa", es decir, "iglesita". Se registra metátesis del grupo consonántico -cl- > -gr-, y palatalización de la "s". Es interesante remitir a la tesis expuesta por Juan Flores, para quien en este tipo toponímico puede estarse aludiendo a las pequeñas iglesias y oratorios de época paleocristiana y visigótica.
History
Su término municipal está formado por las localidades de Herguijuela y Rebollosa, ocupa una superficie total de 31,52 km² y según los datos demográficos recogidos en el padrón municipal elaborado por el INE en el año 2025, cuenta con una población de 222 habitantes.
Su término municipal se encuentra dentro del Parque natural de Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia. En uno de los poemas de su Cancionero, fechado el 28-VI-1928, Unamuno menciona la localidad de [H]erguijuela de la Sierra.
Monuments
El pueblo posee una arquitectura tradicional bien conservada y motivo de visita para los numerosos turistas que se acercan a la Sierra de Francia.
