Fresno de Caracena

Fresno de Caracena is a municipality located in the province of Soria, in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It had a population of 22 inhabitants in 2023 and it is one of the less populated areas of the country. Fresno de Caracena is the place where Pere Abat was a cleric, who is supposedly the author of the book "El Cantar del Mio Cid". Fresno de Caracena is also the location of a 12th-century church and a rollo picota used in the past to hang criminals.

History
Tras la reconquista, la aldea quedó adscrita al Alfoz de Gormaz hasta el siglo XVII en que obtuvo la independencia a través del título de Villa, pasando a pertenecer al señorío de los Marqueses de Berlanga.
En el censo de 1789, ordenado por el conde de Floridablanca, figuraba como villa eximida en la intendencia de Soria, entonces conocido como Fresno, con jurisdicción de señorío y bajo la autoridad del alcalde ordinario de señorío, nombrado por el duque de Frías. Contaba con 252 habitantes.
A la caída del Antiguo Régimen la localidad se constituyó en municipio constitucional, conocido entonces como Fresno, en la región de Castilla la Vieja, partido de El Burgo de Osma que en el censo de 1842 contaba con 52 vecinos y 210 almas. A mediados del siglo XIX, la villa tenía contabilizadas 50 casas. Aparece descrita en el octavo volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
