Fresno Alhándiga

Fresno Alhándiga is a village and municipality in the province of Salamanca, western Spain, part of the autonomous community of Castile-Leon. It is located 35 kilometres (22 mi) from the provincial capital city of Salamanca and has a population of 245 people.

History
En el año 939 tuvo lugar en el término municipal de Fresno-Alhándiga la batalla de Alhandega, que tuvo lugar entre el río Alhándiga y la zona hoy conocida como el barranco de Cortos, entre los ejércitos leoneses y musulmanes, saliendo victoriosas las tropas de Ramiro II de León. Asimismo, la documentación medieval recoge la fundación y fortificación por parte de este rey leonés del lugar de Alhandega, no apareciendo Fresno con dicho nombre recogido en la documentación hasta el siglo XIV, respondiendo a la repoblación del entonces despoblado de Alhandega, quedando encuadrado en la Tierra de Alba de Tormes en el Cuarto de Allende el Río, a la que ya pertenecía el territorio del término desde su reconquista en el siglo X por parte de las tropas del Reino de León. Con la creación de las actuales provincias en 1833, Fresno-Alhándiga quedó integrado en la provincia de Salamanca, dentro de la Región Leonesa.
A mediados del siglo XIX el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 178 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el octavo volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
