Entrena

The zone was populated by Romans, as it indicates the Roman town of La Dehesa, in addition to the road of Zaragoza-Briviesca that crossed the municipality.

Alfonso I of Asturias the Catholic in the middle of 8th century reconquered the villa from the Muslims. According to the Geographic Dictionary, published in Barcelona in 1830, Entrena would be founded by this king around 750, but already it is known by the Chronicle of Alfonso III that these incursions realised by this king did not suppose the foundation of villages. These expeditions, carried out along with their brother Froila, consisted of killing the Muslims they found and gathering Christians to take them to the mountains.

In 1044, Entrena appears documented under the romance name Antelena.

From 1076, it belongs to Castile and to its king Alfonso VI. This king, before the strategic value of the zone, border with the kingdoms of Aragón and Navarre, populated and raised diverse fortresses to protect his interests. One of those seats was Entrena.

In 1160 Sancho VI of Navarre "repopulated" the villa.

In certain gifts of king Sancho VI of Navarre it appears with the Latin name of Entidigone.

During the reign of Stephanie of Foix, widow of García Sánchez III of Navarre, was one of the villages favored by the privilege of union and other rights, with Sojuela, Velilla de la Rad, Fuenmayor, Hornos de Moncalvillo, Medrano and Navarrete. These municipalities were known as the Seven Towns of the Country. Later, this queen donated Entrena to the monastery of Santa María la Real of Nájera, appearing named as Antelana.

In 1189 the Benedictine monks of Santa María la Real of Nájera, among others, donated the church of Entrena to the bishopric of Calahorra after lawsuits between the bishop and the monastery, with intervention of the king and the abbot of Cluny.

King Enrique II of Castile donates the town to Juan Ramirez de Arellano by the lent services, according to appears in the concession writing of the Señorío de Cameros. Since then the town would be linked to the Arellano family that would have great disputes with the Gómez Manrique (they were gentlemen of Navarrete by donation realised in 1380 by Juan I of Castile to Diego Gómez Manrique de Lara).

In 1478 the neighbors of Navarrete destroy fortifications constructed by those of Entrena. In retaliation, people of Clavijo and Lagunilla, that were of Arellano, destroyed the term of Ribafrecha that was affection of Manrique family. Entrena, until the abolition of the señoríos, belonged to the counts of Aguilar, gentlemen of Cameros.

In 1492 the expulsion of the Jews in Spain is carried out by the Catholic Monarchs. At this time the Jewish community in Entrena was important, getting to constitute an aljama, with an approximated population of 50 families.

In 1503 Carlos Ramirez de Arellano and his wife, Juana de Zúñiga, gentlemen of Cameros and counts of Aguilar, founded the monastery of Santa Clara in Entrena granting to him in addition the already preexisting Santa Maria de Barrivero. The founding nuns came from Tordesillas and the monastery belonged to the franciscan province of Burgos. The first abbess was a Arellano.

Entrena had a hospital and hostelry to take care of the pilgrims that approached by the French Way to arrive at Compostela as they testify documents of 16th century.

After the disappearance of the señoríos, in 1811, formed part of the province of Soria, until the creation of the province of Logroño on 30 November 1833.

In 1851, according to Pascual Madoz, Entrena had 202 houses, the City council and prison; a convent of monks of Santa Clara, a source of potable water [...] And school for both sexes. His production consisted especially in wheat, barley, beans and wine, in addition to rear of sheep and the hunting of partridges, quails and hares. The industry was based in three mills, that each day go in decadence, and some factories of liquor, that works very little.

According to this census Entrena had a population of 181 neighbours, 780 souls.

The Coffer of Mercy:

In 1571 Francisco de Moreda established an agricultural government social security fund, that it had the objective to distribute cereals, especially wheat, between the poorest farmers. These had to give back the grain loan with a minimum interest. Normally the neighbors of the town benefited from this one, but during first half of the 18th century also they did those of neighboring localities. It was in operation until 1799.

Santa Ana Hill:

It is an archaeological deposit excavated at the end of 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s by Antonio González Blanco and Urbano Espinosa Ruiz.

The rests found more ancient belong to the hallstatt culture. Treat of two funds of bench-like sheds were recovered abundant material that find in the Museum of La Rioja. These materials consist in polished ceramics, painted, fingered and spatulated. The vessels are generally decorated with high neck and biconic profile. Also highlight several moulds for metallic axes realized in sandstone.

This site was found in the peak of the hill and believe that it was a holy place since they have found ashes and other rests that indicate it. The populated could develop around the sides of the hill but his rests have disappeared because of the crop of these lands.

Also have found rests of back periods, Celtiberians (La Tène culture) and Romans. The location of the settlement was next to the shod that communicated Zaragoza with Briviesca. Of the Roman era have found rests of ceramic, some Roman scales, lids of sarcophagus, low burials knit and a human-like round trail from the early Christian era.

Edificios y monumentos:

Iglesia de San Martín.

Construida en el año 1545 en fábrica de sillería. Es una iglesia de una nave de tres tramos con capillas entre contrafuertes, crucero y cabecera ochavada de tres planos. Dentro de la iglesia parroquial sobresalen el retablo mayor y el coro.

Convento de Santa Clara.

Fundado en 1513 por Carlos Ramírez de Arellano y su esposa Juana de Zúñiga, condes de Aguilar y señores de Cameros.​ Las primeras que lo habitaron fueron tres monjas procedentes de Tordesillas. En 2001 fue clausurado por falta de vocaciones.

La iglesia adyacente consta de una nave de dos tramos y cabecera cuadrangular, con capillas a modo de brazos de crucero en el primer tramo. El retablo del altar mayor y capillas son barrocos.

Ermita de Santa Ana.

Situada a 2 km de la localidad por la LR-137 en dirección Navarrete. De apariencia barroca, del siglo XVIII, fue restaurada en 1964 y 2005. El lunes de pentecostés se realiza una procesión llevando una imagen de la santa hasta la ermita. Tras la misa se va al cercano paraje Las Riberas donde, bajo las choperas, se asan chuletas.

Crucero.

Construido a mediados del siglo XVI, situado en la plaza del Coso. Está formado por un fuste cilíndrico situado sobre gradas, y rematado por un capitel toscano. Sobre él se sitúa un nudo con templete, en el que aparecen seis imágenes, con una cruz con calvario por un lado y la Piedad por el otro.

Está situada en una hornacina en la calle Regajo. Es romanista, de comienzos del siglo XVII.

Parques y jardines:

Las Riberas es un pequeño parque situado a 2,5 km de la población, desarrollado cerca de una fuente junto al Río Daroca.

Enoturismo:

El "Turismo del Vino" o enoturismo se ha convertido en uno de los grandes emblemas turísticos de La Rioja. En Entrena se encuentra uno de los hoteles bodega más interesantes de La Rioja. Se trata del Hotel Bodega Finca de los Arandinos, el primer proyecto enoturístico en La Rioja que integra bodega, hotel, restaurante y spa, y uno de los símbolos turísticos de la zona.

Otros lugares de interés:

Cerro de Santa Ana. Localizado entre la ermita y las Riberas se encontró durante unas excavaciones en los años 1960 un poblado de la Edad del Hierro.

Centro de Divulgación de Energías Renovables. Construido en 2001 por la empresa ARESOL.​​

La sierra de Moncalvillo se encuentra cerca de la localidad, aunque fuera de su municipio.

Las fiestas más importantes son las de San Cristóbal celebradas el 10 de julio.

Otras festividades son:

San Blas: El 3 de febrero, se solapa con la fiesta de Los Quintos.

San Isidro Labrador: El 15 de mayo, con procesión y bendición de los campos.

La Hermedaña: Celebrada el Lunes de Pentecostés. Es una romería en la que se celebra la abolición del tributo de las cien doncellas. En ella se traslada una imagen de Santa Ana desde la Iglesia de San Martín hasta el paraje de Las Riberas donde se realiza una comida popular. Después la imagen se lleva a la cercana ermita de Santa Ana.

Santa Ana: El 26 de julio, la imagen de la santa vuelve de la ermita al pueblo, realizando una romería por sus calles. La asociación de la tercera edad organiza una comida.

San Martín: El 11 de noviembre, es el patrón de la iglesia.

Eduardo Barriobero y Herrán (1875 1939) pasó toda su infancia en el pueblo de su padre. Llevó a Entrena a varios pleitos favoreciendo siempre al pueblo. Ahora una calle lleva su nombre.​

Sor Isabel de los Ángeles (¿?-1972), religiosa clarisa.​

Juan Barriobero y Armas, Barón de Río Tovía, letrado del Consejo de Estado y miembro de algunos de los puestos más relevantes de la administración en tiempos de Alfonso XII. Fue senador electo por la provincia de León y diputado de la entonces existente circunscripción de Sahagún, cargo que ostentó durante al menos cinco legislaturas, según consta en los registros del Congreso de los Diputados.

Esteban Rodríguez Velilla (1777-1808), médico de los Reales Cuerpos. Residía en Chinchón cuando explotó la guerra de la Independencia (1808-1814). El archiconocido dos de mayo, salió sable en mano, a combatir al invasor francés. Resultó herido de gravedad cuando socorría a un compañero. Trasladado a su casa, paso varios días, hasta que un grupo de franceses entraron en su casa, le propinaron una paliza, y dejándolo por muerto saquearon la casa. Murió diez días después.​

José García Barriobero (1910-1948), alias Satanás, fue ejecutado por garrote vil tras ser declarado culpable de asesinato. Su ajusticiamiento es el último de la entonces provincia de Logroño.​​

En las elecciones municipales de 2007, el Partido Popular obtuvo 5 de los 9 escaños que corresponden al ayuntamiento de Entrena. El PSOE obtuvo los 4 escaños restantes mientras que el Partido Riojano quedó sin representación.​

Carreteras:

La principal vía de acceso es la LR-254 que comunica Entrena con Lardero y Logroño a través de la N-111. La LR-137 atraviesa la localidad de sureste a noroeste y enlaza con las carreteras N-111, N-232 y la autovía A-12 uniendo localidades como Nalda, Navarrete y Fuenmayor. La LR-445 comunica Entrena con la vecina localidad de Sojuela y la LR-444 parte de la LR-137 a la altura de la ermita de Santa Ana hasta Medrano. Desde diciembre de 2009 está en construcción la variante de Entrena en la LR-137 de más de 3,5 km.​​

Autobuses:

En diciembre de 2010, Entrena y otros municipios del área metropolitana de Logroño, están comunicados con la capital riojana mediante un servicio de transporte metropolitano. Está activo entre las 7 y las 22 horas y tendrá una frecuencia aproximada de 1 hora.​
