Belchite

Belchite is a municipality and town in the province of Zaragoza, Spain, about 40 km southeast of Zaragoza. It is the capital of Campo de Belchite comarca (administrative region) and is located in a plain surrounded by low hills, the highest of which is Lobo. In 1122, Alfonso the Battler founded the Confraternity of Belchite to defend the frontier between the Christian kingdoms and al-Andalus. On 15 June 1809, during the Peninsular War French and Spanish forces fought in the Battle of María near the town. Between 24 August and 7 September 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, loyalist Spanish Republican forces fought Francisco Franco's rebel forces in the Battle of Belchite in and around the town. After 1939, a new town was built near the ruins of the old one, which remains a ghost town as a memorial to the war. The ruins of the old village have been used as a filming location in films including Terry Gilliam's 1988 film The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. It also appeared as a location in season 3 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon with part of an episode taking place in the ruins.

History
Es conocido por haber sido escenario de una de las batallas simbólicas de la guerra civil española, la batalla de Belchite. Como consecuencia de los enfrentamientos, el pueblo fue destruido. En lugar de su reconstrucción, el régimen del dictador Francisco Franco decidió crear un pueblo nuevo al lado (hoy conocido como pueblo nuevo), dejando intactas las ruinas del anterior como recuerdo de la guerra civil española y de lo que se consideraron excesos del bando vencido. El conjunto, hoy en día abandonado y en parte cerrado al paso de personas, se conoce como Pueblo Viejo de Belchite. Tiene los títulos de "muy noble, leal y heroica villa", y ostenta la Cruz laureada de San Fernando que Franco le otorgó.

What to visit
Patrimonio:
Entre los principales elementos patrimoniales del municipio destacan el Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Pueyo, el Museo Etnológico y el conjunto del Pueblo Viejo de Belchite.
El antiguo núcleo urbano conserva parte de su trazado histórico y diversos restos civiles y religiosos, y constituye el principal enclave patrimonial de la localidad. El conjunto está protegido como bien de interés cultural, con la figura de sitio histórico; además, la delimitación del bien fue modificada en 2022, las ruinas fueron incluidas en el World Monuments Watch de 2025 y el recinto fue declarado Espacio de Interés Turístico de Aragón en 2026.

Fiestas patronales: martes siguiente al Domingo de Resurrección, en honor de la patrona de la localidad, Nuestra Señora del Pueyo.

14 de septiembre, en honor a la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz (fiestas mayores).
11 de noviembre, en honor de San Martín de Tours.

El recinto del Pueblo Viejo de Belchite ha servido como localización de diversas producciones audiovisuales. Entre las obras citadas en las fuentes figuran Las aventuras del barón Munchausen, El laberinto del fauno, Incierta gloria y Spider-Man: Lejos de casa.
