Almonacid de la Cuba

Almonacid de la Cuba (Aragonese: Almonecir de la Cuba) is a municipality located in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. According to the 2012 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 252. Lobo Hill, an important Spanish Republican artillery position where the artillery strafed what is now Belchite old town during the Battle of Belchite (1937) is located 2 km (1 mi) to the east of Almonacid de la Cuba. The caves and holes have been preserved and are open to visitors.

Origins
El término Almonacid proviene del étimo latino monasterium (monasterio), a través del árabe AL-MUNASTIR. A su vez, La Cuba puede proceder también del étimo latino cupúla (cúpula), a través del árabe QUBBA. El término árabe, además del elemento arquitectónico, solía denominar a los monumentos funerarios cubiertos mediante cúpulas. Por tanto, el nombre del pueblo describe su origen como un edificio religioso que contenía una cúpula o un monumento funerario.
History
A mediados del siglo XIX el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 480 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el segundo volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
