Origins
Arama es un topónimo de origen y significado desconocido. El topónimo parece poseer un sufijo -ama, que Koldo Mitxelena no consideraba de origen vasco y que aparece en otros topónimos vascos como Beizama, Lezama, Cegama y Ulzama. Para algunos de estos topónimos se admite un origen celta. Arama podría estar relacionado con otro topónimo como Aramayona.
Siempre se ha escrito como Arama y no existe diferenciación entre el nombre vasco y castellano del pueblo.
History
A mediados del siglo XIX, el lugar, ya por entonces con ayuntamiento propio, tenía contabilizada una población de 99 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el segundo volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz con las siguientes palabras:
