Abejuela

Abejuela is a municipality located in the province of Teruel, Aragon, Spain. According to the 2018 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 49 inhabitants. It is the southernmost town in Aragon. Sierra de Javalambre rises north of the town and Sierra del Toro to the east.

History
There is little documentation on Abejuela, because almost all its files were destroyed in the Civil War.
It is known from oral tradition, that the first settlers were people exiled to its highest and coldest point called Almansa, where the hermitage of Santa Margarita is located. It is believed that around the fifteenth century the first buildings on what is now Abejuela were built, these are the Church and the military tower in the square.
Abejuela, is still one of the few towns that retains almost all of its architecture intact, with renovations remaining faithful to its surroundings and despite the years they have been kept in perfect condition.
Monuments
Entre los monumentos que se pueden encontrar en Abejuela, hay que destacar:
La iglesia de San Agustín. Se ubica en la plaza que se abre en la calle principal. Presenta una torre campanario cuadrada. Su construcción data del siglo XVII y sigue las pautas del estilo barroco. Presenta nave única, con cubierta de bóveda de cañón de un solo arco, pudiéndose observar capillas entre los contrafuertes. Destaca su torre campanario por su planta cuadrada y sus tres cuerpos.
Cisterna. Se trata de una construcción con bóveda de sillería (sin labrar) para la recogida de agua de lluvia.
Ermita de Santa Margarita, data del siglo XIII y de fábrica de piedra de cuarzo. Se construyó por encargo del rey Jaime I, y presenta cuatro crujías separadas por arcos de piedra sillar y mampostería, pudiéndose observar la existencia de contrafuertes exteriores. Su puerta de acceso es sencilla enmarcada en un arco de medio punto de piedra, al que precede un atrio que se añadió posteriormente a la construcción original.
Ermita de la Virgen de los Desamparados
Casa de mampostería y sillarejo encalados, sita en la calle frontón, que se cree debió ser un viejo torreón.
