History

De fundación medieval, como parte de la Comunidad de villa y tierra de Montejo, el resto de su nombre significa Valle de Vacas.

Hacia mediados del siglo XIX, el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 117 habitantes. La localidad aparece descrita en el decimoquinto volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:

Patrimonio:

Parque natural de las Hoces de Río Riaza.

Iglesia parroquial de San Cristóbal, de estilo barroco. Destaca la pila bautismal románica, los retablos neoclásicos y el retablo mayor, con una imagen de la Inmaculada Concepción en la hornacina central. Hay varias pinturas del Maestro de Maello y una de estilo gótico.

Fuente del Cierzo, de origen medieval.

Antiguo lavadero.

Bodegas soterradas.

Colmenar.

Varias tenadas.

Ermita románica en ruinas de El Casuar.

Viejos palomares.

Casa consistorial.

Antigua fragua.

Zona recreativa de El Corral del Tío Manuel, con una caseta de interpretación del Pino;

Arquitectura tradicional de piedra, adobe, pino, enebro y teja.

Fiestas:

La Purísima (Inmaculada Concepción), patrona, el 8 de diciembre.

El Pedrisco, o Día del Voto, el 15 de junio. Celebración pagana que conmemora una gran granizada que aconteció en el pueblo.

Semana Cultural, primera semana de agosto. Organizada por la asociación cultural El Alto.

San Cristóbal, patrón, el segundo domingo de agosto.

Gastronomía:

Pollo al Chilindrón.
