Origins
Su denominación se mantiene inalterada desde su fundación medieval, traduciéndose como 'valle de Rodrigo'. Así, el «Val» se traduce por valle y nos indica la denominación empleada más habitualmente en el leonés medieval para referirse a 'valle'. En cuanto al «de Rodrigo» nos indicaría que la creación de la localidad habría sido dirigida por alguien llamado Rodrigo (algunas teorías apuntarían a Rodrigo González Girón, fundador de Ciudad Rodrigo y vasallo de los reyes leoneses), de quien tomó el nombre el pueblo, hecho bastante frecuente en toda el área leonesa y que se da en otras localidades del entorno como Villarino de los Aires (originalmente Villarino de Arias) y Villar de Peralonso (Villar de Pedro Alonso) así como en el mismo sentido Guadramiro (Guad Ramiro, que se traduciría por valle de Ramiro, en este caso del rey Ramiro II de León).
History
Su término municipal está formado por un solo núcleo de población, ocupa una superficie total de 22,35 km² y según los datos demográficos recogidos en el padrón municipal elaborado por el INE en el año 2025, cuenta con una población de 129 habitantes.
