History
In April 1973 it was announced that "Electra de Viesgo" was going to build the nuclear power plant of Santillán, with four units at four million kilowatts, and an initial cost calculated at 80,000 million pesetas. The company acquired 71.6 hectares of land, the equivalent of 71 soccer fields, in a coastal strip which covered the surface of the municipalities of San Vicente de la Barquera and Val de San Vicente, next to the cove of the beach of La Fuente. On the cliffs of Santillán-Boria a ditch was constructed to carry out the preliminary surveys for the construction of the nuclear power plant. It was scheduled to begin the production of power in 1982, with an output of 970 megawatts. Finally, due to political and social opposition from Cantabria and Asturias, the power company abandoned the project.

Roberto Escobedo (PSC-PSOE) es el actual alcalde del municipio, tras renunciar a la alcaldía el anterior regidor, Miguel González Vega. El anterior alcalde renunció al cargo en marzo de 2012 debido a su elección como senador en los comicios nacionales de 2011. Las siguientes tablas muestran los resultados de las elecciones municipales celebradas en el año 2003 y 2007. En las elecciones del 2011, el PSOE fue de nuevo el vencedor de las mismas con un 55,63% de los votos y 7 concejales. El PP consiguió 3 ediles y el PRC uno.
