Torrescárcela

Torrescárcela is a municipality located in the province of Valladolid, Castile and León, Spain. According to the 2004 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 164 inhabitants.
Origins
Su nombre evoca quizás la existencia de un fortín medieval que sirviera de prisión ('torre-cárcel') aunque según algunos historiadores, el nombre de Torrescárcela podía ser anterior a la invasión musulmana. Prueba de su antigüedad es el escudo, en el que se puede ver una torre de cuatro plantas coronada con una cruz, que bien pudo haber sido una torre cárcel.
History
A mediados del siglo XIX, el lugar, por entonces con ayuntamiento propio, tenía contabilizada una población de 205 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el decimoquinto volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:

Sus fiestas se celebran el primer sábado de mayo, en honor a la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz (organizado por la Cofradía del Santo Cristo del Amparo), y el 6 y 7 de agosto en honor a los patronos, los Santos niños Justo y Pastor.
