History
The lands within the borders of the current municipality of Santoyo were populated since, at least, classical antiquity. In the Sarnallano moor some material remains of a vaccaean fort can be found. The "Las Quintanas" Roman villa was built in the Late_Roman_Empire, probably in the 4th century - in the 1990s archaeologists discovered amongst its ruins an oven, a hypocaustum, some pottery (both terra sigillata and common) and a well full of debris.
All settlements were abandoned as a consequence of the downfall of the Visigothic Kingdom. The current Santoyo is the result of a resettlement carried out in September 988 (late 10th century) under Fernán de Armentales, a vassal of count García Fernández of Castile. The name of the town itself is most probably derived from the Latin Sanctus Ioannes. In the 11th century it was a fortified town, but very scarce remains of the wall have survived.
Monuments
Iglesia parroquial de San Juan Bautista: Posee un crucero gótico, con torre románica y algunos ventanales del mismo estilo. Su majestuoso retablo es renacentista. El pórtico de entrada a la iglesia es plateresco y está muy deteriorado por la calidad de la piedra; en él campean los escudos de su mecenas el Patriarca de las Indias Antonio de Rojas Manrique, gran restaurador del convento franciscano de Villasilos. El púlpito, en madera de nogal, plateresco, es obra anónima del XV. El coro de la iglesia tiene tres piezas importantes: el órgano, barroco, actualmente restaurado con el que se ofrecen frecuentes conciertos. La sillería en nogal, renacentista, con apostolado en los respaldos de las sillas. En medio del coro el facistol. La iglesia está declarada BIC.

Rollo de justicia: Existió, en el exterior de las murallas, un rollo de justicia ya desaparecido. El mal llamado rollo de justicia de Santoyo está en la plaza de Fray Pedro de Santoyo. Es en realidad una superposición de piedras de las que alguna pudo pertenecer al primitivo rollo; otras no. La pieza superior procede de las ruinas del antiguo convento de Villasilos. El monumento se compuso en 1977 con motivo de la celebración del sexto centenario del nacimiento de Fray Pedro de Santoyo, reformador franciscano y fundador del convento de Villasilos. Está declarado BIC.
