History
A mediados del siglo XIX el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 161 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el decimotercer volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:

Destaca el monasterio cisterciense de San Andrés de Arroyo. En la localidad también se encuentra la Iglesia de San Juan construida a comienzos del siglo XIV y con elementos tardorrománicos.
