History
Las primeras referencias históricas se remontan a la Edad del Hierro, en la que se sitúan los restos de un asentamiento humano conocido como El Castillejo. Enclavado en un pequeño cerro de suelo pizarroso, este castro era perfectamente defendible gracias a la protección que ofrecían el Almonte y un arroyo subsidiario de éste, reforzado por una modesta muralla.
Con Monroy, Talaván e Hinojal compone los Cuatro Lugares. Perteneció al señorío de Monroy hasta el siglo XIX y en tiempos fue constituida como aldea de la Villa de Garrovillas de Alconétar.
A la caída del Antiguo Régimen la localidad se constituye en municipio constitucional en la región de Extremadura, partido judicial de Garrovillas que en el censo de 1842 contaba con 120 hogares y 567 vecinos. A mediados del siglo XIX el lugar tenía contabilizadas 180 casas. Aparece descrito en el decimotercer volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
