Santa María de las Hoyas

Santa María de las Hoyas is a municipality located in the province of Soria, Castile and León, Spain. According to the 2010 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 156 inhabitants. The town is 60 km by car from the capital of the province, Soria, and 30 km from El Burgo de Osma. Most of the land in the municipality is occupied by forests of pine trees, in which grow a wide variety of mushrooms, and wheat fields. The area also includes part of the Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park. A Gothic church, built in 1232, is located in the town.

History
En el censo de 1785, ordenado por el conde de Floridablanca, figuraba como villa del partido de Aranda en la intendencia de Burgos, con jurisdicción de realengo y bajo la autoridad del alcalde ordinario, contaba entonces con 613 habitantes.
A la caída del Antiguo Régimen la localidad se constituye en municipio constitucional, conocido entonces como Santa María y Muñecas, en la región de Castilla la Vieja que en el censo de 1842 contaba con 124 hogares y 490 vecinos. A mediados del siglo XIX, la villa tenía contabilizadas 100 casas. Aparece descrita en el decimoprimer volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
