History
La localidad perteneció al ayuntamiento de Mestanza hasta 1842, cuando se constituyó como municipio.
A mediados del siglo XIX, el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 435 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el décimo volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
Hasta la reforma de la nomenclatura municipal de 1916 el municipio se llamaba simplemente San Lorenzo. En dicha fecha su nombre fue modificado por el de San Lorenzo de Calatrava.

Festivals
Las fiestas grandes son el día 10 de agosto en honor al patrón del pueblo, San Lorenzo Mártir. En la localidad se conserva un pequeño hueso de dicho santo como reliquia, la cual se procesiona el día 10 de abril.
También se celebra con unos dulces especiales (hornazos) el día de San Marcos (25 de abril).
El día de San Isidro se celebra con una romería en el campo (15 de mayo).
Uno de los momentos que más expectación levanta de la Semana Santa, es la cita con el Juego de las caras el Viernes Santo, es el único juego profano que se celebra en Castilla-La Mancha.
