Rábade, also known as San Vicenzo de Rábade, is a town and in the province of Lugo, and the smallest municipality in Galicia, northwestern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of Lugo. Rábade has a population of about 1500 and an area of 5.2 km2. It is at an altitude of 400 meters. Until 28 May 1925 Rábade was part of Begonte. The town's name is of Arabic origin. Rábade holds market days on the 2nd and 22nd of every month and on those days you can eat a traditional dish: octopus. It has celebrations on 22 and 23 January and 15 August. The Copa Miño de Piragüismo is a local tourist attraction.

History

El municipio surge en 1925 al segregarse del municipio de Begonte.

Rábade participó en la asamblea de Concejos de Galicia de 1932 para la propuesta del Estatuto de autonomía de Galicia. En 1935 el gobierno le concede el título de villa. En 1950 pasa a denominarse Rábade en vez de San Vicente de Rábade.[1]

En el Museo Diocesano de Lugo se conserva una lápida sepulcral escrita con caracteres visigóticos encontrada en sus cercanías. Su texto es el siguiente: ODOVIA IN PACE VIVAS ERA DCCCC A. Por lo tanto se corresponde con la era 930, es decir, el año 892.

Está bastante fundamentada la posibilidad de que, durante la dominación sueva, fuese un Coto Real.

En Tras do Regueiro, zona vieja de Rábade, se halla un roble centenario.
