Plenas is a municipality located in the Campo de Belchite comarca, province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. According to the 2004 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 131 inhabitants. It was the home town of the Aragonese revolutionary Manuela Sancho, who fought in the Siege of Zaragoza against the invading French Imperial Army. At the time of her birth, in 1784, the town had 825 inhabitants and 200 houses.

History

En la Edad Media perteneció a la Comunidad de aldeas de Daroca, pero como vasalla de esta. La localidad fue el lugar de nacimiento de Manuela Sancho Bonafonte (heroína en los sitios de Zaragoza).

A mediados del siglo XIX la villa tenía contabilizada una población de 390 habitantes. Aparece descrita en el decimotercer volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:

Monuments

Iglesia parroquial dedicada a Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, construida en el siglo XVI. La torre barroca de ladrillo es del siglo XVIII y destaca sobre el caserío Durante la Guerra Civil sufrió graves daños. A principios del siglo XXI se restauró la torre y la Iglesia.

Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Carrascal. Se trata de un conjunto de edificaciones que van desde el siglo XIV al XIX, entre las que destaca la ermita, con crucero de estilo barroco rural.
