El municipio comprende los núcleos de población de Laroles —capital municipal—, Picena, Mairena —siendo ambas entidades locales autónomas— y Júbar, así como los diseminados de El Cercado, La Fuentezuela, Haza de Doña Ana, El Hornillo, Pago Andurón y La Roza del Molinero.
Gran parte de su término lo ocupa el parque nacional y natural de Sierra Nevada.
