Montejaque

Montejaque is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of Serranía de Ronda. The municipality is situated approximately 125 kilometres from the city of Málaga, 21 from Ronda and only 2 from Benaoján. It has a population of approximately 1,000 residents. The natives are called Montejaqueños.

History
El nombre de Montejaque proviene del latín Monte Sacrum, que significa montaña sagrada.
Durante la época de Al-Andalus, hubo en la localidad una alcazaba desde la que veía gran parte de la Serranía. Esta construcción desapareció completamente, quedando sólo su nombre en la finca "El Castillo". Otro de los lugares históricos de este municipio es el lugar conocido como "El Puente", donde aún se ven los restos de un puente romano sobre el río Campobuche.
Tras la reconquista por los Reyes Católicos, el pueblo fue entregado al conde de Benavente, al cual nombraron Señor de Montejaque y Benaoján dejando de pertenecer a los arrabales de Ronda.
Más tarde, durante el levantamiento del pueblo morisco de la zona en el siglo XVI, se produjeron varios atentados contra el alcalde morisco Mohamad Idriz, por simpatizar con las autoridades cristianas.
En el siglo XIX, durante la Guerra de la Independencia contra los franceses, ocurrió en Montaje un enfrentamiento entre el guerrillero José Aguilar y las tropas napoleónicas en el puente del río Gaduares el 20 de octubre de 1810. En esta contienda participaron hombres de Montejaque, Benaoján, Atajate, Cortes de la Frontera y Jimera de Líbar. Sólo eran doscientos cincuenta personas en contra de casi setecientos soldados franceses; a pesar de la inferioridad numérica salieron victoriosos.
