History

De la Edad Moderna se conserva un documento de 1516 de ley de vecindad: vecindades entre las villas de Piedrahíta y Bonilla de la Sierra.

A mediados del siglo XIX, el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 248 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el decimoprimer volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:

Monuments

La Iglesia de Santa María de Mesegar se levantó a mediados del siglo XVI, y su capilla mayor se remata en bóveda de perfecta factura. La torre de sus pies repite las características de las de los lugares cercanos y está reparada con grandes grapas de hierro. Nos es conocido que sus maestro constructor fue Diego de Vandadas, que cobró por mano de obra 340 ducados. El retablo que aparece en la capilla mayor es obra del villafranquino Juan Antonio Herrera, que en el año 1752 cobró, solo por su dorado, la cantidad de 700 reales. También intervinieron en la fábrica los maestros Diego Gómez de Cisneros, el cual, en el año 1613, construyó y doró la custodia, y Felipe Gómez, que en 1613 hizo la imagen de la Virgen y una urna para el sacramento.
