A mediados del siglo XIX, el municipio tenía contabilizada una población de 2740 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el undécimo volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz con las siguientes palabras:
