Matanza de los Oteros is a municipality in the province of León, Spain. It has an area of 20.69 mi2 (53,58 km²) with a population of 179, as of 2017. It is about 28.58 mi (46 km) south of the Leonese capital, León.

History
The history of this municipality is obscure before the reign of Alfonso III of Asturias. During his reign, this area was repopulated by Asturians, Franks, and Mozarabs alike. The etymology of the site originates from an alleged battle that took place in the area. In 878, the Emir of Córdoba, Muhammad I, raised an army to invade the Kingdom of León. Alfonso III met him in battle in what is today known as Santa Cristina de la Polvorosa where Muhammad I was defeated. The Cordoban army went into a rout and the victorious Asturians gave chase; the ensuing massacre was so great that the plain was named the Slaughter of the Hills (Matanza de los Oteros). Scholars are dubious of this claim, noting that it may simply be a corruption of the name mata ancha (broad bushes) into matanza (slaughter).

Ermita Virgen del Rosario
Se carecteriza por tu torre del campanario. Esta presenta un estilo románico-mudéjar con la base construida en piedra y formada por dos cuerpos. En el interior destaca la imagen del siglo XVI de la patrona local, la Virgen del Rosario.
Fiestas:
El pueblo de Matanza de los Oteros celebra sus fiestas patronales el primer fin de semana de octubre de cada año, en honor a Nuestra Señora del Rosario, en las que se reparte vino, avellanas y chocolate. La patrona de Matanza de los Oteros es conocida popularmente como La Cañamona. Este calificativo parece que se debe a que la talla primitiva fue encontrada entre cañamones o cañaverales, lo que no resulta extraño si se tiene en cuenta que, en tiempos de la morisma, los cristianos ocultaban sus imágenes en los lugares más insospechados para evitar su profanación.
La Cofradía de la Virgen del Rosario tiene fechada su fundación el primer fin de semana de octubre de 1970, ya que se rigió a la Regla creada en 1595. Dicha regla nos señala como celebrar la Fiesta del Rosario y desde el año citado (1595) hasta el día de hoy se vienen celebrando tal y como lo indicaban los mandatos de ella.
