Illán de Vacas is a town in the province of Toledo, in Castile–La Mancha, Spain. The surface area of the municipality is 9.15 km2, and it has a total population of 2 inhabitants as of 2024, making it the least populated municipality in Spain. Illán de Vacas belongs to the "comarca" of Torrijos. It is bordered on the north by the municipality of Los Cerralbos, on the northwest by Otero, on the east by Domingo Pérez, on the south by Cebolla and on the west by Lucillos. The town lies at an elevation of roughly 480 m, and 59 km west of Toledo and 35 km east of Talavera de la Reina, on the railway line between Talavera and Torrijos. It is approximately 95 km southwest of Madrid. The mayor of Illán de Vacas is Julián Renilla Bru of the Partido Popular. In the 2004 General Election in Spain, all four votes cast at Illán de Vacas went to the Partido Popular. The municipality contains a church consecrated to the Assumption of Our Lady (Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora).

Origins
El término de Illán se deriva del latín Iulianus. El nombre del lugar proviene del culto a San Illán o Julián. El segundo término del nombre, Vacas, tiene un origen árabe ya que procede de la palabra wakka.
Un documento de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI comunica que el lugar se llama Vacas y que en él vivía un bienaventurado llamado Illán. Se desconoce si guarda relación con San Illán, santo venerado en la cercana localidad de Cebolla.
History
In the past, the town was tied to Los Cerralbos with its beginnings as a workhouse. Illán de Vacas appears in a 1512 document that indicates that three soldiers were captured here. In the 17th century, this hamlet was repopulated with 37 families. In the mid 19th century, it had 22 houses and the municipal budget rose to 2,200 reales, of which 800 reales were used to pay the secretary.

Por desgracia, ninguna estación ferroviaria presta servicio actualmente en el municipio.
Con la apertura del tramo ferroviario comprendido entre Torrijos y Talavera de la Reina el 19 de junio de 1876, entraba en funcionamiento la estación Illán de Vacas-Cebolla que daba servicio a ambos municipios. Durante décadas no solo sirvió para que los lugareños pudieran desplazarse a otros puntos sino que además valió para la exportación de cereal, vino y otras manufacturas propias de la zona. Con los años fue perdiendo su importancia hasta quedar en un simple apeadero. A principios de los años 1990 las pocas instalaciones que quedaban fueron derruidas debido a su estado ruinoso.[cita requerida]
La estación contaba con edificio de viajeros de estilo neomudéjar, muelle de mercancías, retretes, pozo, casillas para los trabajadores de la estación, así como casilla para el guardabarreras y garitas para los guardagujas de las cuales aún se conserva una en la trinchera ubicada en lo que era la salida hacia Montearagón.[cita requerida]
