Ereño is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, northern Spain. Ereño is famous for its ″marble″. In the 1st century CE the Romans were mining the quarries, which are no longer being used. There are literary references that call Ereño the "capital of the marble route". This material can be found in numerous buildings in Urdaibai and also on the other side of the ocean. The decorative limestone Rojo Ereño was named one of the IUGS Heritage Stones in 2024. According to historian Tomás de Goikolea, Ereño was built in the 9th century and the residents of the town may be direct descendants of the inhabitants of the Santimamiñe cave. On 29 September, the San Miguel festival, a popular mass is held and a pilgrimage is done.

History

Hacia mediados del siglo XIX, el lugar, una anteiglesia ya por entonces con ayuntamiento propio, tenía contabilizada una población de seiscientos habitantes. Aparece descrito en el séptimo volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz con las siguientes palabras:

También se ha desarrollado a partir de 2019 un interesante proyecto artístico, de la mano de los artistas plásticos Rober Garay y Alberto Palomera, que consiste en una galería al aire libre enfocada al Arte y la Naturaleza, con un conjunto de obras integradas en las canteras del monte Geranda.

El discurso conceptual de ambos artistas gira en torno al Mármol Rojo de Ereño, y a los moluscos rudistas que le dieron su internacionalmente reconocido patrón estético. Alrededor de esta propuesta gráfico-geológica, han construido un universo de referencias visuales llamado Sintonía Arrecifal.

El espacio, denominado Ereño Behatokia, recibe la visita habitual de personas sensibles que disfrutan del espacio y su original discurso narrativo.

Garay y Palomera, bajo el nombre artístico de 'LePatafisic Cabinet , han creado también el Ereño Museoa, un centro de interpretación del conjunto artístico exterior, instalado en un hórreo garaixe en el centro de la localidad, abierto al público y dispuesto a modo de Gabinete de Curiosidades.
