Es Castell (Balearic Catalan: [əs kəsˈteʎ]) is a small municipality in eastern Menorca in the Balearic Islands, Spain. The town was founded in 1771 by British Col. Patrick Mackellar and was originally called Georgetown in honour of King George III; however, it takes its current name from the large fort nearby, known to the British as St. Philip's Castle. Col. Patrick MacKellar (Argyllshire 1717-1778) was the chief engineer of Menorca and his house today is known as Son Granot. Es Castell celebrates its Foundation Day on 1 June with 18th-century themed festivities, in which the Municipality itself, St. Philip's Castle Foundation, Son Granot and other institutions participate.

History
El municipio comprende los núcleos de población de Es Castell —capital municipal—, Bello Horizonte (Son Vilar), Cala San Esteban (Cala Sant Esteve), El Fonduco, Santa Ana (Santa Anna), Sínia d'en Riera, Sol del Este (Sol d'Est) y Trebelúger (Trebalúger).
El núcleo urbano principal fue fundado en 1771 por los británicos con el nombre de Georgetown en honor del rey Jorge III de Inglaterra durante el periodo en que Menorca estuvo bajo dominio británico y como queda reflejado en el escudo, en el que aparece San Jorge matando al dragón. Cuando la isla fue recuperada por España en 1782, cambió su nombre por el de Real Villa de San Carlos en honor del rey Carlos III, posteriormente abreviado a Villacarlos. Debido a su situación geográfica, es el primer pueblo de España en ver salir el sol.
