Situado en la cuenca del río Arnoya, pertenece a la comarca de Celanova, cuyo monasterio ejerció su dominación en toda el área durante el periodo feudal.
Hacia mediados del siglo XIX, el municipio tenía contabilizada una población de 3945 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el quinto volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz con las siguientes palabras:
