Bermellar is a village and municipality in the province of Salamanca, Spain. It is 90 km (56 mi) from the provincial capital city of Salamanca and has a population of 134 people. It predates Celtic times. Bermellar lies 639 metres (2,096 ft) above sea level and the post code is 37249.
Origins
El origen del topónimo Bermellar se hallaría, según la teoría del profesor Antonio Llorente Maldonado, en el color rojizo de la tierra donde se asienta («bermeyu» en lengua leonesa). Sin embargo en opinión de Pascual Riesco Chueca sería equivalente a los antiguos topónimos portugueses «Marmelar» (siglo XIII) o «Marmelal» (1265), que aluden al árbol del «membrillo» («la marmiellal» en lengua leonesa, del latín «melĭmēllum»), y podría compararse también con los nombres de lugar burgaleses Marmellar de Abajo y Marmellar de Arriba. Este último aparece documentado en 950 como «Malmellare», confirmando así su relación con «melĭmēllum». Cabe citar además el nombre del despoblado de «Marmellar», también en la provincia de Burgos, documentado con idéntica forma en 1011. Como refuerzo de esta hipótesis, puede mencionarse el hecho de que en 1421, es indicado en Ciudad Rodrigo un Benito Pérez de «Mermellar», probablemente originario del pueblo.
History
Su término municipal está formado por un solo núcleo de población, ocupa una superficie total de 28,46 km² y según los datos demográficos recogidos en el padrón municipal elaborado por el INE en 2025, cuenta con una población de 129 habitantes.
