Bédar is a municipality of Almería province, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. It was a Moorish settlement and then a parish it developed in an area of iron mining and grew to 1,000 residents in recent years. In 2026, Bédar experienced a significant wildfire.

Origins
El origen del nombre de Bédar es muy incierto. Se ha querido otorgar una procedencia árabe, ben Beder, aunque no existen evidencias que sustenten esta hipótesis. Por otra parte, Joan Coromines sostiene un origen íbero, al ser las terminaciones -al y -ar muy frecuentes en los topónimos de esta procedencia; así, señala al término beda, con significado de camino. También se ha propuesto una raíz vascuence, bedartz, que quiere decir hierba. También hay quienes apoyan que el idioma íbero tiene su base en idiomas altaicos, en cuyo caso se decantan por veda, que significa vado.
Sin embargo, existen documentos históricos que se refieren al pueblo como Vedar, Vidar, creando más confusión si cabe.
History
The history of Bédar can be traced to the early 16th century, when it was a Moorish settlement in the land of Vera. The parish of Bédar was formed in 1505 after the ‘Reconquista’, and began to use the old mosque as a centre for Christian worship, until construction of the current church. After repopulation of Bédar at the end of the 16th century with 27 inhabitants from Mojácar and Vera, the town expanded during the 16th and 17th centuries to a population around 600 inhabitants.
Mining operations in the area, for iron ore and other minerals, developed during the end of the Moorish period from 1525. The greatest expansion began in the 19th century, which marked a period of prosperity, Bédar being the third most important iron-producing area in the province of Almeria. After several breaks, coinciding with the World Wars, the industry finally closed in 1970, leaving an important industrial archaeological legacy.
Products from the mines were transported to Garrucha for onward transport by sea, following the construction of substantial aerial cableways and the Bédar to Garrucha Railway.

El Castillico o castillo de los Moros está catalogado como bien de interés cultural (BIC).
Bedar es una de las pocas poblaciones del Levante Almeriense donde todavía se pueden observar las típicas construcciones moriscas realizadas en termoarcilla. Este material era muy utilizado por la antigua población para construir viviendas dado su gran capacidad aislante y gran resistencia. Muestra de ello son las cuevas situadas en El Marchal.
