Aiguafreda (Catalan pronunciation: [ˌajɣwəˈfɾɛðə]) is a municipality in the comarca of Osona, in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is located near the Montseny massif. It has a population of 2,190 and occupies an area of 7.96 km². The principal economic activities are tourism and the textile industry. There is a large dolmen located in the center of the property of can Brull, and the church of Aiguafreda de Dalt, founded by the abbess Emma, daughter of the count Wilfred the Hairy.

History

El antiguo topónimo del municipio era Ayguafreda. A mediados del siglo XIX el lugar tenía contabilizada una población de 325 habitantes. Aparece descrito en el decimoquinto volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:

En 2022 se celebró un referéndum municipal en el que hubo un apoyo mayoritario para cambiar el municipio de la comarca del Vallès Oriental a la de Osona.[cita requerida]

Monuments

Cabe destacar el gran dolmen, situado dentro de la propiedad de Can Brull, y la iglesia de Ayguafreda de Dalt, fundada por la abadesa Emma, hija del conde Wifredo el Velloso. En esta se descubrieron en junio de 1972, importantes restos arqueológicos románicos.
