Ahigal

Ahigal is a municipality in the province of Cáceres and autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. The municipality covers an area of 52.07 square kilometres (20.10 sq mi) and as of 2011 had a population of 1,435 people.

Origins
El origen de la serie de nombres de lugar “Ahigal” es un topónimo vegetal. Figal vive como apelativo en Asturias: la figal es la higuera; se conservan abundantes formas La Figar, La Figal o Figares en la toponimia asturiana. Como en latín, se mantiene el género femenino del nombre de árbol. Así ocurre, sistemáticamente, en la diplomática medieval leonesa: “illa pariete tota integra que es contra illa figal” (Zamora, 1178).
El topónimo Las Figalles cerca de Toro (Zamora) es citado en 1463. En forma diminutiva, La Figalina, en Fermoselle. En la evolución desde La Figal a [El] Ahigal se ha producido una segmentación errónea del artículo. Cuando previamente se ha producido la masculinización del nombre del árbol, la evolución es diferente: así en el caso del topónimo menor Ligar o Higar, en Andavías (Zamora), documentado como La Figal en el siglo XV.
History
At the fall of the old regime the area was formed into a constitutional municipality in the Extremadura region, judicial district of Granadilla, then known as Aigal, which, in the census of 1842, had 250 homes and 1370 residents
