History
En 1594 formaba parte de la Tierra de Alcántara en la Provincia de Trujillo.
A la caída del Antiguo Régimen la localidad se constituye en municipio constitucional en la región de Extremadura, partido judicial de Garrovillas que en el censo de 1842 contaba con 240 hogares y 1315 vecinos. A mediados del siglo XIX la villa tenía contabilizadas 225 casas. Aparece descrita en el primer volumen del Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar de Pascual Madoz de la siguiente manera:
En 2025 contaba con 808 habitantes censados.

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, en el centro del pueblo, del siglo XVII. Es la iglesia parroquial del pueblo.
Ermita de Santa María, al Sureste del pueblo, del siglo XVII.
Ermita del Cristo de la Cañada, al Este del pueblo, del siglo XVII.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, en la finca El Valsano. Allí se celebra la romería.

Las Carantoñas, 20 y 21 de enero, en honor a San Sebastián, declarada Fiesta de Interés turístico Nacional.
Feria Ibérica del Queso de Cabra de Acehúche. Fin de Semana Domingo de Ramos.
Fiestas del emigrante, el primer fin de semana de agosto.
Romería de la Virgen de Fátima, el primer sábado después de Semana Santa.
La Machorrita, el 23 de diciembre.
